Zlatan Ibrahimovic acknowledges that playing football was ‘easier’ than navigating his current role, yet he remains humble and eager to acquire new skills.
In a recent interview with CBS Mornings, Ibrahimovic, now an advisor for Red Bird, joined forces with Christian Pulisic to discuss his transition from player to mentor.

Having retired in 2023 and stepped into his advisory role last December, Ibrahimovic reflected on the stark differences between his previous and current careers.
“I can confidently say that playing football was easier than what I am doing now. I am on a learning journey. I’m humble about it. This role presents a different perspective than what I was accustomed to, but I have a great support system,” he shared.
When discussing the challenges he faces now, he noted, “As long as they win, everything is fine; the real challenge arises when they start to lose.”
“It’s fine for me, but I can’t influence the game in the same way I used to. It requires a shift in mentality, mood, and the ability to impart experience to other players.”
Ibrahimovic’s famous mental fortitude remains a cornerstone of his approach, even after his playing days.
“Many people wonder if my demeanor is an act, but it’s genuine. What you see is truly me. Coming from where I do, confidence is paramount,” he explained.
“You had to advocate for yourself and strive to be the best. I always enjoyed playing football, whether in school or on the streets. I carried this confidence with me, thinking, ‘I am the best; who else is there?’ This mindset is crucial because, when you enter the professional arena, especially in the competitive environment where Christian currently plays, mental strength constitutes 50% of the game. Without it, survival is difficult.”
Ibrahimovic is now focused on imparting his wealth of experience and strong personality to the younger players at Milan.
“I believe it all starts at a young age, and the trajectory depends on how far you want to go. Discipline and hard work are essential,” he stated.
“At an early stage, it’s vital to prepare the mental aspect for the big leagues. It’s a matter of being the predator or the prey. Players exhibit different personalities and characteristics. I was quite aggressive on the pitch as a young player, but I lacked the balance in how to interact with others. As I gained experience, I learned to embrace and protect my teammates. This evolved approach is necessary, especially when working with young talents; they need that push.”
Ibrahimovic boasts an impressive career, having secured five Serie A titles and netting 156 goals in 283 appearances in Italy’s top flight.
