Former Amazulu and Marumo Gallants coach Romain Folz has returned to South African football as Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach.
The Frenchman was understood to have been introduced to the Downs players as a member of the technical team.
The Brazilians are currently in Austria on a European tour, where they have played several friendly matches under the watchful eye of coach Manqoba Mngqithi in preparation for the 2024/25 season.
Sundowns recently reshuffled their set-up following the shock departure of coach Rhulani Mokwena following an alleged rift with sporting director Flemming Berg.
They pulled off another surprise by driving into the Falls as part of their backroom staff.
It was a role that will soon be vacant, as Michael Loftman will not be traveling to Austria with the rest of the squad as he wants to follow Mokwena out the door, despite still having a year left on his contract.
Folz, 34, has divided opinion during his short spell in the Premier League, failing to win any of his six matches in charge of Marumo Gallants during the 2022/23 season.
He then took over at Usuta, where he recorded four wins in 19 games before being appointed sporting director on an interim basis, only to quit and move to Guinea to coach Horoya AC – a spell that lasted just two matches.
Folz then returned abroad to take up a new challenge as performance manager at world governing body FIFA. He now returns to the PSL as Sandown’s assistant coach alongside Mngqithi and Komphela.
